Abstract:
Countries that are members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) constitute a significant part of the world's foreign trade flows. Because of the size of the share of the current foreign trade of the APEC and its potential that increases its share in international trade in the following years, Turkey's trade with countries which are members of this economic group will gain more importance in the future. The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors influenced Turkey's foreign trade flows with 21 countries that are member of APEC between 1997-2016 years using the panel data analysis method based on gravity model and to explain and interpret the changes occurring in the countries' foreign trade flows. In this way; factors affecting international trade between Turkey and the APEC countries were identified and evaluated. In this study, total foreign trade volume of Turkey and APEC countries was used as a dependent variable; the ratio of foreign trade volume to GDP, exports, imports, difference in gross domestic product (GDP), difference in per capita gross domestic product (GDP), population, Linder effect, relative factor endowment, distance between countries and surface area of countries were used as independent variables and membership of G-20, membership of G-8, membership of OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development), free trade agreements and visa variables were used as dummy variables. As a result of the analyzes made with 7 models; foreign trade volume/GDP, exports, imports, Linder effect, relative factor endowment and the membership of G-20 variables have affected positively the foreign trade volume between Turkey and APEC countries; difference in GDP, membership of OECD and visa variables have affected the foreign trade volume negatively. In addition to this; difference in per capita gross domestic product, distance of countries, population, surface of countries, membership of G-8, viii economic crisis and free trade agreements variables don't have significant relationship with the variable of foreign trade volume between Turkey and APEC countries.
