Abstract

In many cases, lactating sheep are unable to consume sufficient energy during the first 3 weeks of postpartum and milk production in these weeks influences the yield of later month's lactation. It is known that there are strong correlations between milk yield and selection of energy and protein from feed materials (Tolkamp et al., 1998). Plasma and milk urea nitrogen values are currently used as tools to evaluate diets (Cannas et al., 1998). The objectives of this study was to investigate the effect of diet selection on urea nitrogen and total protein in plasma and milk of nondairy sheep.
