Genetically
modified bacteria refer to bacteria that have undergone deliberate modification
in their genome (DNA/RNA) using recombinant DNA technology and that have
acquired distinct genotypic or phenotypic features or properties. GM bacteria containing
induced genes of interest can be used to produce a large amount of recombinant
proteins. Furthermore, GM bacteria are of great scientific interest as delivery
vehicles for biological products and have attracted significant commercial
investment. GM bacteria have shown promise for sustainable agricultural
development, environmental remediation and therapeutic application, with a slew
of new technologies on the horizon.
