Perlite-based lightweight structural elements are particularly preferred
in applications that require thermal insulation. Raw perlite, when expanded at
high temperatures (200 °C), is transformed into expanded perlite, a lightweight
aggregate material. Additionally, lightening raw perlite by swelling it with
hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is also possible. In this study,
raw perlite and expanded perlite were used as binders by utilizing sodium
hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) to produce
geopolymer building materials. The obtained samples were examined in two
groups: the first group containing only borax, while the second group
containing both borax and H2O2. The samples were cured in an oven at 85 °C for
24 hours and then subjected to compression and flexural tests after 28 days of
waiting to determine their mechanical properties. Compression and flexural test
results were compared at all mixing ratios, and the densities after curing were
also determined. The sample densities were compared with the flexural test
results. Test results regarding mechanical properties showed a positive effect
of borax. However, as the percentage of H2O2 increased, it negatively affected
the strength of the samples. Nevertheless, the increase in the percentage of
H2O2 caused a decrease in density, resulting in a positive effect.
Microstructural analysis results indicate the presence of geopolymer formation
in the samples. Additionally, the remarkable air entrapment property was
observed along with the formation of microstructural voids in the samples. SEM
(Scanning Electron Microscope) and EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) analyses were
employed to observe the microstructural characteristics of the obtained
samples.
