In this study, an application of the portfolio selection model has been performed by using the Markowitz quadratic programming method on companies enrolled in the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) 100 index. In the first phase of the study, the standard Markowitz portfolio selection model, defined as a quadratic programming model, has been transformed to one which forms a portfolio with a similar risk-return structure to the ISE 100 index. Subsequently, by using the 15 days, monthly and trimonthly return values of the ISE 100 companies for the period between January 2003-July 2004, the expected return and variant-covariant matrice has been created and the model has been solved. The data of four different terms have been used in the study in order to be able to observe the change in the diversity of the behaviour of the investors and to be able to conduct a comparison between the periods. In the second phase of the study the portfolio weights which have lower risk than the return level equal to the ISE 100 index and the portfolio weights which are at the same risk level with the ISE 100 stock exchange but with a higher return have been calculated by using the standard quadratic programming model. In the study, it has also been demonstrated that the the portfolio selection models with a complex mathematical infrastructure may be solved more readily by using the Excel Solving Programme.
